MILITARY

Roger is proud to be a veteran, but he is more proud of his continued support of our young men and women that are currently serving. As an Honorary Commander, he spends lots of time on the base attending award assemblies, change of commands, banquets, promotions and social activities. He works hard to promote a great working relationship between our military base and community.

Roger believes in honoring those that have fought for our freedom. He was blessed to be able to tell our WWII veterans thank you by supporting those veterans who had an opportunity to fly to Washington, D.C. to see the National WWII Memorial. Roger and Sherri were also invited to an event to thank those who donated time and money to this wonderful cause. Roger will never forget his time as a guardian with a WWII veteran.

Three years ago the Ford Family was asked to be a pilot family for a new program. This program was named Team Tinker Home Away From Home. It is a non-profit organization designed to assist first-term Airmen and Sailors just out of basic training. It pairs young service members with civilian host families to help alleviate the anxiety of being alone or far from home, often for the first time. Community sponsors provide them a welcoming place to relax and offer opportunites to have fun aways from the stress and day-to-day requirements of life on Tinker Air Force Base. They enjoy group activites and personal interaction that can develop into strong, long-lasting bonds. The ultimate goal of Team Tinker Home Away From Home is to provide all eligible, first-term Airmen and Sailors with a "home away from home." It is close to Roger and Sherri's hearts because they are both veterans and remember being away from home for the first time, not knowing anyone, missing family and friends.

The following bulletin points can be seen on the brochure that he hands out while knocking doors.

  • Roger and his wife are both veterans.

  • Roger proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and currently serves as an Honorary Commander for the 552nd ACW at Tinker Air Force Base.

  • Roger served on the Governor's Task Force to help prevent base closures in Oklahoma.

  • Long-time supporters of Oklahoma Honor Flight - Roger had the honor of serving as a WWII guardian on a trip to Washington, D.C., to see the National WWII Memorial.

  • The Fords are a charter family for the Tinker Home Away From Home Program, commonly known as the "Adopt an Airman" program.
